Chalk lettering is an art that basically uses a chalkboard to create quote masterpieces. Chalk lettering is a very intricate piece of art which was popularized through its use in cafés and boutiques. It is now quite popular on social media sites such as Pinterest and Instagram. Just like with any piece of art, chalk lettering gets better with practice. There are some basics to the art, however.
First of all, chalk lettering can be done in three main fonts which at first might seem limiting, but is not. These fonts are script, serif and sans-serif. These fonts are pretty easy to master, making chalk lettering an art for the masses in my opinion. It is worth noting that there are different fonts that fit into these basic fonts. Serif fonts have 'feet' on them which is to say their bases are elongated on the bottom. Sans-serif are fonts that don't have the 'feet' described above. Script fonts looks kind of like calligraphy because of it's flowery strokes. Once you've grasped the basic ideas, the possibilities are endless. You could mix things up and use different fonts in different sizes and styles and thicknesses. The choice is in the hands of the artist (you).

The second thing is to decide what you want to write and your vision of how it will look on the chalkboard. It's advisable to have a notebook of ideas so that once you are finished you can transfer it onto the chalkboard instead of practicing on the board itself. You can also trace with a chalk pencil and go over with a marker to avoid mistakes. This saves time and reduces your messiness. Once you have decided on this, you can look at your board size and shape and factor that into your general design. Now you can decide on which font you'll use and whether there are certain words that you want to emphasize on the board. You can also decide what will work best for your quote. From here, take your piece of chalk and make your vision a reality on your chalk board.
Now that you are aware of the basics of chalk lettering, you can change things up a bit and make it modern.
Instead of traditional chalk, how about chalk markers for some color? Liquid chalk markers are a great tool to use on chalkboards and are easier to wipe off than regular chalk, making them preferable. You can use different colors to create shading or you can keep it simple with 1-2 colors.

The two provide a different look to your piece of art. A good tip is to use the liquid chalk markers to write the words themselves and then use the pencils to create shadow giving depth to your letters. If you are afraid of messing up your board, start with a chalk pencil and go over with a liquid chalk marker.

Use all the colors you can possibly find and use both chalk pencils and chalk markers in different words. This creates a very colorful piece of art.

The type of writing or quote you choose depends on who it is for. You can decide to put a chalkboard in your kitchen and use it as a menu for your family so they know what's going to be had for dinner. In this case color will work wonders as you try and represent the food in their specific color. Just because it's called chalk lettering doesn't mean you can't get creative and add some images like a heart or a carrot if carrot soup is what's for dinner.
Another great idea is to use a chalkboard to give yourself positive affirmations. You can write something like, 'You're beautiful' or 'Seize the day' and hang it in your bedroom. This way you get positive vibes through your chalk lettering.
